When
you're passionate about something, you want to share that passion with
the whole world—or at least with as many people as you possibly
can. And you want to share it in a way that touches them, and maybe even
changes their lives.
That's how Kelly Bollman, who graduated in 2005 from the Institute for
Integrative Nutrition in New York City, feels about her work as a holistic
health counselor. As part of a wellness team assembled by MBS Connect,
she will be going into corporate environments to educate employees—in
both large and small groups—about the building blocks of a healthy
diet.
"I want to reach these people and tell them how they can improve
their health, how they can change their diet and their lives," Kelly
says. "I really want to be able to connect with them so they can
get something out of my talks."
Kelly came to RiverWays because she wanted to make sure that her message
would get through. She recently completed Carla's 12-week Speaking
with Confidence for Results program.
"My goal was to be more comfortable speaking to large groups about
how to eat well, and I walked away having achieved that goal," Kelly
says. "I have a huge array of tools now for connecting with large
audiences and getting my message across in a more interesting, powerful
way."
Some of the techniques Kelly learned are straightforward, such as using
props, like food items, to create a structure for her lectures, or addressing
a single individual in a large group instead of staring out into a sea
of faces. Carla recorded Kelly and the other participants in the 12-week
program as they addressed the group, building toward a 20-minute presentation
during the last session. Watching the tapes, Kelly said, helped her to
become aware of her habitual physical tics. "You see things you don't
even realize you're doing," she says.
Kelly has also come away with less concrete yet equally valuable approaches
to public speaking. Now she allows her talks to "come from the heart
rather than memorizing them," she says. She especially appreciated
the way Carla wove holistic principles into the training, teaching participants
how to quiet their minds before a talk and using the five natural elements—water,
fire, earth, air, and space—to represent the different qualities
that create a successful public speaking experience. When all these qualities
are balanced, the speaker's words, breath, and energy remain flowing and
focused.
"Public speaking used to be something I could do because I had to,
but not something I looked forward to," Kelly says. "Now, instead
of having anxiety about the talks I have coming up, I'm actually excited
about them."
