Carla Kimball explores connections between photography, movement and public speaking Cambridge, MA, March 2007 – Carla Kimball, a public speaking coach and the founder and president of RiverWays Enterprises, will present a performance art piece titled “Revealed Presence/Embodied Presence,” March 30 at 6 p.m. at Lesley University’s Marran Theater, on the main campus between Mellen and Everett Streets in Cambridge. The performance is presented in conjunction with Kimball’s photography exhibit of the same title, which is on view at the Marran Gallery from March 26 through April 5. Both Kimball’s performance piece and photography exhibit are part of a larger show of artistic works, entitled “Presence,” that includes the work of advanced certificate and expressive therapy doctoral-level Lesley students. An opening reception is set for March 30 from 5 to 6 p.m. Kimball’s performance and exhibit use movement and imagery to focus on the elusive quality she refers to as “embodied leadership presence.” “Leaders with presence are often described as being self-confident, authentic, fully human and of having the capacity to make deep and meaningful connections with individuals in the audience,” Kimball says. “Underlying each one of these qualities is the experience of ‘being in your own skin,’ of being grounded and centered.” “Since many people who come to me are not accustomed to consciously occupying their bodies, I want to develop an approach to help non-movers discover this quality of embodied presence within themselves and then apply it to speaking situations,” Kimball says. Kimball’s exhibit includes a series of pictures she took of random objects she encountered in day-to-day life, which she photographed as a way of “making the ordinary extraordinary simply by revealing it through my camera lens,” she says. “My photography explorations showed me in a more meaningful way that presence is not only about something we radiate through our demeanor but also about something we give to our audience by turning the focus of our attention to them rather than on ourselves.” In her performance, Kimball will explore embodied presence through movement in relation to her photographs revealing presence in everyday objects. The exhibit also includes photographs Kimball took of Diana Kyricos, a yoga teacher in Chelmsford, performing a yoga movement sequence. “The exhibit contrasts the quality of her extraordinary embodied presence with my images revealing the presence of ordinary objects,” says Kimball, who is also a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher and Kripalu DansKineticsTM instructor. “I have become engrossed in comparing this quality of ‘revealed’ presence in photography with the very conscious and deliberate ‘embodied’ presence accessed through yoga and authentic movement.” Kimball, who holds an MBA from the Crummer School of Business, Rollins College, and a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Lesley, returned to Lesley University last fall to pursue an Advanced Professional Certificate in Creativity, Imagination and Leadership. Her work with clients helps them to develop a speaking presence by becoming relaxed, natural and engaged with their audiences.
