Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I had my first show last night since [the workshop] this weekend…
I was able to incorporate so much that I learned into my show.
When I first was introduced I paused, took a breath, and the
most amazing thing happened… the applause got even louder!
It was amazing the whole show. I was able to really bring
in the five elements. I could go on and on about moments that
I was able to connect and really speak from the heart. I am
now concentrating on practicing these new skills. I will have
the opportunity to share my experience with my colleagues
this summer.

It’s been more than a year
since I participated in your public speaking program and I’m
amazed that not only have my new speaking skills not diminished,
but they’ve actually improved.
I’ve been doing a lot of speaking
to promote a book I co-authored about my family s experiences
during the Holocaust (Inge: A Girl s Journey Through
Nazi Europe), and I find that I continually think
about the things I learned from you. I’m aware of my
breath, of my eye contact with members of the audience, of
my ability to slow things down, and so on.
The other thing that surprises me is
that the terror I feel about public speaking is still with
me, only now I’m much more comfortable with it than
I was when I started my Riverways program. I know this sounds
a bit strange, but it’s almost as if I’ve become
friends with my fear. I’ve come to recognize that it’s
not going away, and so now I find myself awaiting it, and
trying to smile at it and humor it a bit.
The bottom line is that I’m more
comfortable in front of audiences, and I know from the feedback
I’m receiving, along with new invitations to speak,
that I’m connecting with audiences.
Thank you, Carla, for helping me come
in closer contact with my own inner strength, and in the process,
develop speaking skills I know I’ll have for a lifetime.

Speaking with
Confidence for Results
Note: Our Speaking Circles program
is referred to within these testimonials because it is an
integral part of our Speaking with Confidence for
Results program.
David Wolf
Director, A financial firm in Boston
I've had a very deep, life-long
fear of public speaking dating back to when I was a very young
child. It is, perhaps, the biggest fear I've had to live with.
For several days before any presentation, I would be continually
overcome with waves of physical anxiety that resulted in my
feeling a high degree of stress, an inability to sleep, and
a plague of constant negative thoughts. On some level it even
seemed that I unconsciously conspired to do a bad job. While
presenting I just wanted to get it over with as fast as possible,
doing the bare minimum.
While I was participating in the Speaking
with Confidence for Results series I had the opportunity
at work to present to a group of people five or ten times
larger than any I had presented to before. In the days, hours
and minutes before the presentation I kept waiting for my
typical reaction to kick in. But it never happened. Instead
I had the sense that I was very prepared for and capable of
making this presentation. I felt very much at ease and with
a sense of this is where I'm supposed to be. I was in control
and had an inner calmness that I have never felt before. It
was actually enjoyable.
There’s really not one particular
thing that stands out in my Speaking Circle
experience that contributed most to this new attitude toward
public speaking. Instead, all the exercises and discussions
that were part of this program combined together to create
a significant personal transformation. It is such a rare opportunity
to take time out from our busy lives to work on an inner skill
with others who are dealing with similar issues. The discussions
with others and watching their progress made me realize that
I was not alone in my fears and that growth and change could
happen. Through the exercises I learned how to ground myself
and how to breathe. I learned about the power of silence and
about the potential that exists when it seems like I have
nothing to say. I really valued the opportunity to practice
over and over again, and found that by watching the video
and hearing the feedback, I realized that I'm really not as
awkward as I thought I was.
Perhaps most importantly to me, this
change feels permanent, like I've stepped over some kind of
line — a threshold — and I'll never revert back
to the way I used to be. I no longer feel like I'm just getting
by. Instead I feel like I'm pretty good at public speaking
and I can now work on getting better. I now have faith in
myself and my abilities. The things I perceived as negative
I now see as relatively small and fixable. It feels like I
have overcome a large personal stumbling block and that I've
moved to a different plane. It's incredible!

I’m a telecommuter, which
means that all of my business interactions and conferences
are over the phone or on the computer. In addition, I am not
just an individual contributor but part of a large team where
coordination and communication among team members are critical
to project success. Because of the nature of telecommunication,
we have the barriers of no face-to-face interactions. I’ve
never actually met some team members including some of the
people I report to.
Before I participated in the Speaking with Confidence
for Results program, I would be very nervous and
anxious during a teleconference because I couldn’t tell
what effect my words were having on other team members. I
couldn’t see the typical visual cues, such as someone
grimacing or nodding their head. I would get especially anxious
when I was presenting difficult news or an unwelcome project
status report. I knew that the tone of my voice would convey
my nervousness. I would speak faster and my communications
would not be very effective. People were listening not just
to what I was saying but were also hearing my anxiety. This
would really hinder my ability to communicate over the phone.
Changing this was really critical to my business success.
In the Speaking with Confidence
for Results program, I learned that it’s not
always the words that you are saying; it’s also how
you are saying them. Even though all our interactions in class
were face-to-face, I learned how important and effective it
was to be present, to change my relationship to time by slowing
it down, and to tune in to my audience even when the only
form of communication is through telecommuting channels. This
program has significantly enhanced the depth of my interactions
and has helped me to better understand the dynamics between
team members. I learned to be present and calm with what I’m
saying regardless of the distractions. This program has improved
my interaction with the team and reduced my stress on the
job. And, it’s helped me not just in business but in
my personal life too!
The nature of what we learned in this
class is not something that’s offered in a traditional
learning environment. It was a treat to have the experience
of this untraditional learning method and realize how fulfilling
and applicable it really was.

I got so much out of this Speaking
Circle program and even now, several years later,
the changes are still in place.
Before I participated in Speaking
Circles, I felt a tremendous amount of anxiety about
all forms of public speaking. My head was filled with noise
- thinking about what I was going to say, how people would
respond to me, what kind of questions they would ask, how
I should respond with the "right" answer, etc. I
was trying too hard at the wrong things, over-compensating
for my nervousness. Before, I had a set of challenges -- now
I have a set of tools that really work!
I think that a lot of public speaking
programs focus on tricks or techniques that would make people
effective. Carla assumes that people know what they have to
talk about. She allows them to eliminate the barriers so that
they can do the best of what they are already capable of doing.
What they end up getting is not a checklist of 10 things that
they have to be really nervous about remembering, but rather,
it's easy access to what's already there.
In the Speaking with Confidence
for Results program it was great to be able to talk
about what it can be like with other people who had similar
business experiences. From our group discussions, the practice
I had presenting to the group, the feedback I received and
the videotapes of my turns, I learned about how important
essence, authenticity, and connection can be, and how powerful
they are as tools in a high-pressured business setting.

Having completed the Speaking
with Confidence for Results program eight months
ago, I have been very pleased with how much it has impacted
me on many different levels. When I speak to a group now,
I might still be nervous but I know just how to get centered.
My presence is larger, too. Rather than tightening up from
the fear, I now feel expansive with the sense that “Yes,
this is where I’m supposed to be.” In my teaching,
I have learned that using silence effectively is a very powerful
tool that creates focus. It’s not an attention grabber
– it’s an attention enhancer. And finally, Speaking
Circles taught me not only how to be a much more
relaxed and confident speaker, but also how to engage different
levels of listening in one-on-one meetings.
Clearly, this program has stayed with
me and has had long lasting and wide-ranging benefits.

I cannot thank you enough for the
confidence I have gained from the entire experience of your
seminar. The program exercises allowed me to discover that
before I started your program I was focusing on the stress
related aspects of speaking that were beyond my control. I
also set unreasonable performance expectations for myself
and the negative energy generated by these aspects would consume
my concentration.
The lessons from your seminar have improved
my creativity, command and poise. I learned that memorized
perfection is not a requirement of a successful presentation.
Rather, I now enjoy a sense of accomplishment from spontaneity
and connection with the audience.
I eagerly anticipate the next opportunity
to speak and as I continue to apply the skills learned at
your seminar last year, my reviews have been improving.
I want to share an evaluation of my presentation
at a recent continuing education program. When I read the
evaluations, I thought of you. Of the 150 pharmacists in attendance,
90% gave me a rating of 5 on a scale of one (poor) to five
(excellent). Here are a few examples of their comments:
Excellent, very involving presentation.
Clear, interesting presentation by a knowledgeable speaker.
Excellent, excellent speaker.
Best of the day.
Get him next year!
He was excellent.
He is a great speaker.

Excellent, kept my attention!
Very informational, great presentation!

I want to share with you a recent
public speaking experience I had which shows how valuable
what you taught me has been. I was asked to present our technology
in a scientific meeting last week with a one-week notice.
What I found most helpful for me is the
grounding exercises. I have been occasionally practicing feeling
the ground and "growing" roots since the class.
While I was practicing the talk last week, all the sudden,
I found I felt grounded and was able to speak slowly and loudly
without much effort. I was very excited about the finding
and couldn't believe it!
In the hours before my talk sitting in
the audience, I started to feel very anxious because I really
did not have sufficient practice - I only ran it once from
the beginning to the end in the morning. What I did was try
to ground myself by sitting on the edge of the chair as you
showed me. That calmed me down. By the time I was on the podium,
I was well grounded and the presentation went well.
I am sure many more people like me will
benefit from your class!

I've recently started my own business,
one which requires me to do a fair amount of public speaking.
In my past, I had never been comfortable public speaking,
and went to a number of programs, including Toastmasters and
Dale Carnegie, to try to get over my resistance.
SpeakingPresence was the first group
that actually helped me feel more comfortable and relaxed.
Within two weeks of ending this six-week program I designed
and led a new seminar – and was 100% comfortable standing
in front of the group!

I have sent many of my executive
clients to Carla's Speaking Circles to develop
presence and comfort in presenting to top management audiences,
leading challenging meetings, and acting as highly credible
contributors in any forum. What has amazed me is that this
method really works and gets results quickly. Within a few
sessions, each client has made improvements noticeable to
himself and others in the organization. Any manager or executive
would benefit from this unique program.

As a Business and Personal Coach
I am always looking for opportunities for my clients to connect
more deeply with their core. The real value of Speaking
Circles is that people learn to be completely themselves
in the presence of others. It helps people to strip away all
the mental chatter of the things they are supposed to be doing
and accomplishing when they are in interaction with others.
For me, perhaps the most powerful aspect of this work is that
it shows how vulnerability can be a real strength when it
comes from a place of connection rather than fear. I was amazed
at the safety that Carla created for me to trust myself. If
you are thinking about joining a Speaking Circle
and would like to talk with someone about this work, please

I highly recommend Speaking
Circles to anyone who has any kind of fear of speaking.
Before I attended Speaking Circles
I experienced the classic symptoms of fear of public speaking
- sweaty palms, mind racing, heart pounding, everything. Even
in a situation where people were merely going around the room
introducing themselves, I still got nervous. I knew I had
to do something about it. I'm a graphic designer and have
to make presentations to presidents and CEO's of major corporations,
so I have to be comfortable addressing these people. But I've
had this fear my whole life. I've taken many classes but nothing
ever stuck with me before Speaking Circles.
My experience with Speaking Circles
has been tremendous. I'm so glad I found this class. Unlike
any class I've taken before, Speaking Circles
breaks the concept of public speaking down to its foundations.
The focus is on getting comfortable in front of an audience.
It doesn't focus on the content, but on being able to make
eye contact and a general connection with your audience. That's
the foundation. You can then build from there. In class, you're
not pressured to say anything if you don't want to, which
is great. Carla offers other, more advanced, classes as well,
so you can work further. And I'm planning to do some more.
The Speaking Circle
is always a supportive group. No two classes are the same
in terms of the mix of people and every one has something
to offer. You learn not just from Carla but from the other
students.
I also must add that what I've found
is that it is also beneficial for speaking situations beyond
public speaking - whether I'm interviewing with someone, or
making cold calls on the phone. I find that I flow a little
better, make more eye contact, and everything just becomes
more natural, without even being conscious of it. These situations
are so much easier to deal with using the tools from the Speaking
Circles.
There are times I would come to
the class feeling stressed from the day's events. However,
every time I would leave class I was transformed and felt
much more relaxed and calm. Carla's really great at making
the class enjoyable for everyone. She always has something
useful to start the class. She begins with a short monologue
of observations from her everyday life that we can apply to
what we're learning in class, which makes what we're learning
much more meaningful and easier to grasp.
John
Independent Consultant, Senior Executive
(The following is a true story written in this form for a
page that no longer exists on this website. I've included
it here because it continues to be a great testimonial for
Speaking Circles.)
John is a senior executive who has
worked as an independent consultant for almost a decade. He
now desires to return to a corporate position and has been
on a formal job search for several months. Recently he attended
a structured networking meeting. At this meeting he would
have the opportunity to sit at two separate tables with seven
other people, present his background and ask for specific
contacts. John knew what he wanted to say. He had five selling
points that were highlights of his background and told of
his impressive accomplishments. But this kind of situation
always made him feel very anxious.
In the first round, John found himself
presenting as he often had in the past. He rattled off his
points, running them together without pacing or pausing, and
made fleeting eye contact. When he had finished he was very
disappointed. He didn't sense a strong connection with anyone
in the group and no one had any leads to offer him. He felt
so deflated by this experience that he almost decided not
to participate in the second round.
Instead, John decided to stay and to
apply some of the tools he had recently been learning and
practicing in Speaking Circles. This time
he was very deliberate in the delivery of each of his five
points. With each point he made strong eye contact with one
person and stayed with that person as he described that one
accomplishment. After each point, he paused for a moment longer,
continuing to make eye contact with that same person before
moving on to the next person and the next point. Before delivering
the new point to the next person, he gave himself a moment
to really be with that person during a quiet, relaxed pause
and then repeated the process as he described his next accomplishment.
John was amazed at the response he received
during this second round. He could tell that he was really
well received. He could see eyebrows rising as he delivered
each point. People seemed very interested and engaged. And,
he was given some very real and useful contact suggestions.
John had delivered the same message
in both rounds. His content was identical. What made the difference
for him was his delivery - his connection with each person
through pausing and eye contact and deliberately being fully
with one person at a time as he described his accomplishments.
As John reflected on this experience he said, "What I
learned from Speaking Circles not only made
a difference in the results. It made a difference in how I
felt about myself. I felt so much more confident and powerful
when I took that path.
James Daniel
Realtor
I'm in a sales business where I
meet new people constantly. I'm somewhat shy and have felt
uncomfortable in social situations all my life. Since I've
been going to Speaking Circles I have found
that I am much more comfortable in just about any situation
involving people. Speaking Circles have given
me a methodology to use that's simple and effective. So now,
when I'm in business situations where I'm meeting new people
I have something to focus on that helps me through my own
fear. I highly recommend Speaking Circles.
They make you feel really good about yourself!
Jane Barron
Marketing Strategy Consultant
As a marketing consultant I'm expected
to do a lot of public speaking in both large group settings,
small meetings, and one-on-one with clients. While I was not
terrified by the thought of presenting to large groups, in
the past I felt as though I wasn't meeting my potential as
a public speaker. Especially with large audiences, I felt
disconnected from myself. My experiences with Speaking
Circles have caused subtle but significant changes.
Rather than feeling reticent, I am now eager to participate
even when asked to speak unexpectedly. I find that my words
feel more alive and real now that I am more connected with
both myself and my audience when I speak.
Kim Novick
Strategic Marketing Consultant
The Circles provide a safe, trusting,
environment in which to learn, share, practice, and hone communication
skills redolent of authenticity and integrity. I now have
some remarkable tools which I apply everyday in both business
and personal situations. I look forward to each Speaking
Circle with a special glee, knowing that when I leave
I will feel like a just-picked apple: fresh, buffed to a glow.
A Public School Educator
I just wanted to let you know how
much your Speaking Circles workshops have
meant to me. This last Friday night I attended a retirement
party held in my honor and was asked "to say a few words"
– a request that would have brought terror to my heart
a few years ago and endless hours of useless obsessing in
anticipation of the "dreaded night." Instead, aside
from a little nervousness, I was actually looking forward
to the opportunity. I had an outline of what I wanted to say,
I didn't memorize it all. Instead I trusted that I was prepared…that
I would be able to say the right thing…that whatever
I said, it would be the right thing as long as I remained
true to myself and didn't try to be perfect… and that
the "audience" and I were in this together. I said
something to each one of the people there (all 28 of them),
I think I spoke for at least 10-12 minutes and I was actually
funny!
Mark Dion
Computer Scientist, CSC
This past weekend, I took a detour
to a place that I never thought that I would be – standing
in front of a group of people and having coherent words coming
out of my mouth instead of just beads of perspiration on my
forehead and a very upset stomach. I was still nervous but
I had the belief that I wasn't going to "vapor lock"
when I was in front of the group yesterday. I was even disappointed
that we only had 2 minutes instead of 5… Now that is
something that I NEVER would have thought I would hear myself
say. I couldn't even get through a 1 minute speech before.
My plan was to go around the whole class
and not say a word. Actually I thought the whole weekend might
be a silent sweaty nightmare, but an amazing thing happened.
After spending time with each person, looking into their eyes
and feeling the support, my heart slowed down and I had this
strange sensation to speak. I'm not sure what I said the very
first time but I know that it was an important step…
That's how it started, but not how it
ended. As I said earlier, I was actually disappointed that
we didn't have more time on Sunday morning to speak in front
of the group. That in itself is a HUGE step for me.
Carla, I wanted to write and thank you
again for creating an environment that allowed all of us to
grow. I feel the changes in myself and I saw some amazing
transformations from some of the others as well. I know I'll
still have some anxiety about public speaking, but, for the
first time in my life I have some positive experiences to
build off of. I KNOW that I can do it now! Thank You, Thank
You, Thank You.
If you are reading this testimonial and
debating whether or not Speaking Circles
would help you with your particular anxiety about public speaking,
all I can say is DO IT, call Carla and make the commitment
to attend one session. I can honestly say it was one of the
best decisions of my life. I didn't arrive at it easily, in
fact I procrastinated so long that the class was full. I got
lucky and got in. Don't let your anxiety about speaking in
public keep you from taking this first step.

The Elemental Speaking Planner
sits right next to my phone at work and serves as
reminder of an area which I’ve tasked myself to grow.
I’ve been doing a lot of radio interviews of late. It’s
been very helpful to have the Planner to focus the skill set
I want to develop in the interview. For instance, when I’ve
been interviewed on call-in talk shows, I’ve focused
on the element of Water to keep me relaxed, knowing my key
points and staying in the moment as I get questions that may
differ from my agenda. I’ve recently moved on to Air
since I find it more of a challenge to remember to breathe.
On the interviews where I haven’t focused on the Planner
and I’ve been distracted by my computer or items on
my desk, the quality of my interviews declines.
I’m extremely grateful for Carla’s
techniques to find and maintain presence.

Motivational Speaker!
I have a desire to be able
to convey my thoughts to an audience in a way that can touch
them. I have struggled with this for a several years. Having
entered a new field of work and written a manual, I knew that
being able to both write and speak well was important.
I recently had an important opportunity
to speak to a national audience. It was essential to me to
go into that experience making a impression and to feel confident
and connected. Having attended several Speaking Circles with
Carla and seeing how she worked, I decided to seek coaching
from her on an individual basis.
Carla creates a very safe space.
Her openness and encouragement allowed me to feel comfortable
during our time together and to carry that experience into
my presentation. By learning to feel confident and relaxed
in our meetings and visualizing myself being successful, I
then had an experiential memory to draw on when standing in
front of the audience. Carla was able to help me identify
and embrace all my internal and external resources. She encouraged
me to work with my own personal images of success and to develop
a strategy for staying centered and balanced throughout the
presentation. While our work together had an immediate impact
on the presentation at hand, my work with Carla ended up being
not just about giving this specific talk. It was also about
personal growth.
After our two meetings together
I felt confident and relaxed in the days before the presentation
and I was not at all nervous in front of the audience. In
fact it was fun. I really enjoyed it. I found the place where
I was comfortable being me and not trying to be someone I
wasn’t. I found my element and didn’t just stand
there, but was able to move around, bring in some humor and
use a variety of props.
Since that presentation, I’ve had
a couple of opportunities to speak to groups as large as 200
people. I found I felt a very close connection with what I
was saying and who I was talking to. I spoke without notes,
speaking from both my head and my heart, and felt much more
spontaneous.
Perhaps one of the most important
lessons from my work with Carla is that I learned that there
isn’t one perfect way to say what I have to say –
there’s a whole universe of possibilities and that whatever
I say in the moment will be just right for that audience and
that context.
